Safety of working with cards

Metaphorical cards are a gentle instrument, but not a harmless one: they work with whatever you bring, and you can bring something it is better not to approach alone right now. This page collects what the method does not do, who should not work alone at the moment, and what to do if a session gets heavy.

What the method does not do

It is easy to assume more about metaphorical cards than there is, and that is the first risk. Four things a card never does, whatever the deck, the layout or the experience of the person holding it.

It does not diagnose

A chosen card cannot produce a diagnosis and cannot identify a disorder. A diagnosis comes from a clinician against clinical criteria, not from a picture someone liked.

It does not predict

A card has no fixed meaning and no reference of interpretations, so it answers no question about the future. What works is what you see in the image.

It does not replace therapy

A session with cards is a 10 to 25 minute reflection practice. It can hand you a formulation worth bringing to a professional, but it is not treatment.

It does not judge you

There are no right and wrong answers here, no «bad» cards and no norm you are measured against. No card says more about you than you said about yourself.

Who should not work alone right now

The list below is not «this is never for you». It is about the state you are in today: in these situations working alone tends to make things worse, because nobody is next to you to help you stop and come back. After stabilisation, and alongside a professional, cards remain available.

An acute state with loss of contact with reality

Hallucinations, delusions, disorientation. In that state an image stops being read as an image. This needs medical help; cards only after stabilisation.

Depression with thoughts of self-harm

If there are thoughts of harming yourself, and especially a plan, a reflection practice deepens the despair. This needs crisis help; contacts below.

The first days and weeks after a hard event

A loss, violence, an accident, a sudden breakup. Stabilisation comes first: sleep, food, safety, simple things with the body. Cards can wait until the acute phase passes.

Active addiction

Substance use, gambling, compulsive eating without treatment. Working with images can strengthen the craving. This needs a specialist, and cards only in coordination with them.

Apathy and no energy

Pushing through in a depleted state usually ends in a sense of failure added to what is already there. With no energy, postpone, or take a 15-minute resource practice instead of a deep one.

Severe cognitive impairment

If holding an instruction and connecting meanings is hard, the work becomes a source of anxiety rather than support. Short resource exercises with someone close are possible; long layouts are not.

On age: the platform is built for adults. Cards do work with children, but that is a different method, different decks and a grown-up who runs the process.

If a session gets heavy

Stop. There is no need to finish the layout: the technique obliges you to nothing, and unfinished work is no worse than finished work.

Move attention into your body and into the room: water, air, feet on the floor, five things around you that you can name. It sounds simple and works better than analysing what happened.

If the heaviness stays, talk to a person: someone close who knows how to listen, or a professional. If you are in crisis, reach a helpline now: 988 (US) or 116 123 (UK).

What makes the work safer

These rules come from facilitator practice, and in self-work they matter more than in a session: nobody is next to you to notice that you went the wrong way.

  1. 1
Do not look for the «right» meaning

The meaning of a card is what you see in it today. Reference books of interpretations are not needed here and get in the way: they replace your answer with someone else's.

  2. 2
Do not draw card after card

When an answer disappoints, the pull to draw another one is strong. That turns the practice into fortune telling and takes you away from the question. One position, one card.

  3. 3
Ask the question before you draw

The situation gets formulated first, the card comes second. In the other order the image starts leading, and you answer its question instead of yours.

  4. 4
    Dose the depth

Every technique on the platform states its depth. On a hard day take a gentle 5 to 15 minute practice, not a seven-card layout.

  5. 5
Write it down and come back

One sentence at the end of a session is worth more than an hour of thinking right away. A few days later the note reads differently, and that is often when it becomes clear.

Privacy of a session

Basic sessions are not saved automatically: close the tab and the table is gone. Saving sessions is available on paid plans and is switched on by you explicitly.

The Self-Work Navigator does not send your answers to the server: the steps and questions run in the browser, and what you wrote on paper or in your own journal stays with you.

This page is not a legal document and does not replace one. It is about the method and about using it without harming yourself.

FAQ

Can I work with MAC cards on my own, without a therapist?
Yes, if your state is steady: the techniques here are built as a sequence of questions and lead you themselves. The exceptions are listed above: an acute state, thoughts of self-harm, the first days after a hard event, active addiction.
Can cards do harm?
A picture on its own does not. What can do harm is working at the wrong time: a deep technique with no energy, or unpacking trauma without support. That is why every technique states its depth and carries a «when to skip it» section.
Is this fortune telling?
No. A card has no fixed meaning, no reference of interpretations and no predictive function. It works as projective material: the meaning appears in your answer to the position question, not in the picture.
What if a card brings up strong feelings?
Stop, bring attention back to your body and the room, do not finish the layout. A strong reaction is information, not a task to solve today. If it does not let go, talk to a professional.
What is the minimum age?
The platform is built for adults. Cards do work with children, but that is a different method and it needs a grown-up running the process.
