Metaphorical cards for anxiety
Anxiety narrows attention: thoughts go in circles, and the harder you try to «just calm down», the tighter the circle. A card does one simple thing here: it gives attention something to hold on to outside you, and a question you can actually answer. Below is a 10-minute practice, the deck for it, and the line past which cards are not the help.
What happens when you are anxious
Anxiety is not a thought but a state of the body, with thoughts catching up afterwards. Breathing quickens and shoulders tighten first, and only then does the head start looking for what exactly is wrong. That is why trying to reason your way out usually fails: you look for a cause where there is not one yet, and find ten at once.
The second thing anxiety does is narrow the field of view. Calm, a person sees both the problem and what surrounds it: support, past experience, options. Anxious, only the threat is left, in close-up. That is why «look at it more broadly» does not work: there is nothing to look with.
Working with a card goes around both. The image is outside you, it does not have to be invented, and it is not tied to your situation until you tie it. That is what brings back the field of view that narrowed.
Ten minutes: one card and one anchor
This is the Safe Place technique: the gentlest on the platform and the only one worth doing while you are actually anxious. It does not unpack the cause and does not look for a solution. Its job is to give you back a point of footing you can return to later in the day.

1
Body first, card second
Water, air, feet on the floor. Two minutes of simple things with the body do more for anxiety than twenty minutes of thinking, and without them the practice will not land.
-
2
Draw one card blind
Do not pick with your eyes: choosing is tiring in itself when you are anxious. Take the first one that comes.
-
3
Describe what you see
Out loud or on paper, three sentences. Not «what it means», but literally: what is depicted, what colours, what is happening.
-
4
Find the calmer place in the image
It does not have to be the whole picture; a detail is enough. Stay with it for half a minute and notice what your body does.
-
5
Take an anchor with you
One sentence or one gesture that will bring this image back today. Write it down: under anxiety memory works worse than it feels.
The full technique with a question per step is Safe Place. If you have a little more energy and want to remember what holds you, take Resource state: four cards, fifteen minutes.
Which deck to take
Light Within
The main pick for this: 80 cards of warm landscapes, states and symbols. The Nature group of 33 cards is easy to try on. See the Light Within deck.
I Feel
84 cards for naming a state more precisely than «I feel bad». Useful when anxiety is mixed with something else and it is unclear with what. See the I Feel deck.
What not to take right now
Story decks with people and conflict scenes. In an anxious state they hand you material you will have to unpack later, and right now the task is the opposite.
When cards are not the help
During a panic attack, do not work with cards in the moment: breathing first, footing, a safe place in the literal sense. The practice can wait until the wave passes.
In an acute post-traumatic state, with depersonalisation or the sense of watching yourself from outside, working alone is contraindicated: stabilisation with a professional comes first.
If there are thoughts of harming yourself, reach a helpline now: 988 (US) or 116 123 (UK). Reflection is not what helps in that case.
A card does not diagnose an anxiety disorder and does not replace treatment. If anxiety lasts for weeks and gets in the way of sleep and work, that is a conversation with a doctor, and the practice goes alongside, not instead. More: safety of working with cards.
