Metaphorical cards about money

Money gets thought about a lot and in circles: income grew and the anxiety stayed, or the work pays and asking for more is still impossible. That is a sign it is not about the amount or the skill. The layout below works on your relationship with money rather than on money: it is not financial advice and not an earning plan.

Why a higher income does not remove the anxiety

A relationship with money forms before the first pay: from how money was talked about at home, what counted as decent to ask for, how conversations about spending ended. That is not knowledge but a habit of reacting, and it does not change because the number in the account got bigger.

Hence the stories that look illogical: a well-paid person cannot raise their rate, a successful founder waits for it all to end tomorrow, a freelancer accepts terms they would never advise anyone to accept. Logic does not help here: it addresses the wrong layer.

Cards are useful because they get around «I know what I should do». An image does not argue and does not advise - it hands you material in which you recognise your own story about money. That story can then be worked with.

A card from the Urban Myth deck

Five cards: the block, three actions, the outcome

The shape is simple and runs left to right: what gets in the way, what to do, where it leads. Twenty minutes alone; paper and pen are not optional.

  1. 1
Name the topic in one sentence

The more specific, the more useful. «My income went up and the anxiety stayed the same» works better than «I want more money».

  2. 2
    First card: what blocks it

Blind. Not external circumstances but the belief or fear you carry around. A good question for this card: what message about money did you hear as a child.

  3. 3
    Three cards: what to do

Blind as well, laid left to right. One action is usually about doing, another about a boundary, a third about a conversation. Each image turns into one line of action.

  4. 4
    Fifth card: where it leads

Pick this one with your eyes. It is the state you want to be in around money. Stay with it longer than the rest and notice what changes besides the amount.

  5. 5
    One action for the week

Not «earn more», but one concrete task with a date: send the invoice that has been sitting since last month, name the price in the email, ask for a review.

The full technique is Money flow (5 cards, 20 minutes). If the question is about the exchange with one person or employer - how much I give and how much I get - take Four-point cross.

What this layout does not do

This is not financial advice. The layout will not tell you where to invest, how to get out of debt or whether to change jobs for money: those questions belong to a financial professional and a calculator.

With compulsive spending or a gambling problem this is not the work to do. That needs a specialist, and reflection with cards can strengthen the pull rather than ease it.

In an acute financial situation - lost income, overdue payments, housing at risk - practical help comes first: a career adviser, a lawyer, a debt support service. Unpacking your relationship with money is useful after that, not instead.

If money anxiety keeps you from sleeping and working for weeks, that is a conversation with a therapist: anxiety of that strength is not held by the amount. More: safety of working with cards.

FAQ

Do metaphorical cards help with money?
They help you see which belief or fear stands between you and money, and pick one doable action. It is work on your relationship with money, not financial advice and not a way to attract income.
Is this about «money mindset» and affirmations?
No. We do not promise that an image on a card changes your income, and we do not work with beliefs through repetition. The layout is built differently: it helps name what gets in the way and turn it into one concrete action for the week.
How long does the layout take?
Twenty minutes: five cards and one written action with a date. Shorter does not work, because the first position usually needs time.
What if the first card brings up something heavy?
Money almost always pulls family history or shame along with it. If it gets heavy, finish at the three actions and go no further. The topic is not going anywhere, and it is better unpacked with some resource.
