Metaphorical cards for burnout
Burnout rarely arrives as an event: more often it is a slow switching-off, where the work is the same and the energy for it is gone, with no clear idea where it went. Cards do not restore energy, but they help you see what takes it and what used to bring it back. Below is a 15-minute practice and the line past which reflection is not the right tool.
What burnout is made of
Research describes burnout through three things: exhaustion, distancing from the work, and a sense that it leads nowhere. What matters is that it is not about hours: a person can work a lot and not burn out, and can burn out on an average load. The difference usually sits in four factors - high demands, little control, little support and lost meaning.
Hence the usual trap: a burnt-out person tries to solve it with rest. A holiday helps the exhaustion and leaves the other three untouched, so two weeks after coming back everything is where it was. What needs unpacking is which of the four gave way.
The second trap is looking for the cause in yourself. «I cannot cope» is a conclusion, not a fact: of the four factors, three belong to how the work is arranged, not to the person. Cards are useful here because they let you look at the situation from outside, rather than from inside self-blame.
Fifteen minutes: what is left and what brings it back
With burnout it is a mistake to start from causes: there is no energy for it, and it slides into listing what is wrong. Starting from the opposite works better - from what still works.

1
Find the resource that is left
Pick a card with your eyes, not blind: footing is recognised, not handed out at random. Even when it feels like nothing is left, something will pull your attention.
-
2
Remember how it used to switch on
The second card is about the action or condition that used to bring that state back. It usually turns out small and available.
-
3
Check who is nearby
The third position is support. In burnout the circle of contacts narrows first, and that is easier to notice from outside than from within.
-
4
Look at who you become in it
The fourth card. Not a goal or an achievement, but you in a state where the energy is there. Stay with it longer than the others.
-
5
One step for the week
Not a recovery plan, but one action that gives back at least ten percent of the energy. With a date.
The full technique is Resource state (4 cards, 15 minutes). When there is a little more energy and you want to unpack what gets in the way, take From obstacle to resource; for the balance between work and the rest of life, Four-point cross.
Which deck to take
Momentum
88 scenes of working life: energy, boundaries, achievement, recovery. The one deck of ours that speaks the language of work. See the Momentum deck.
Light Within
If work scenes are the last thing you want right now, take neutral images of nature and states: 80 cards, nothing about the office. See the Light Within deck.
I Feel
Helps when the state has no name. «Tired» and «I do not care» are different things, and the difference decides what to do next. See the I Feel deck.
Where burnout ends and depression begins
Burnout is tied to a context: on holiday or in a different role the energy partly comes back, and interest in the rest of life holds. Depression is tied to nothing: nothing brings joy, including what always did, and it lasts for weeks.
If sleep and appetite are gone, the body aches without a reason, and «what is all this for» is about life rather than work, a self-guided practice will not help and can deepen it. That is for a doctor.
With thoughts of harming yourself, reach a helpline now: 988 (US) or 116 123 (UK).
A card does not diagnose burnout and does not treat it. It hands you a formulation worth bringing to a professional or to a conversation with your manager. More: safety of working with cards.
