Metaphorical cards and a resource state
A resource is not cheerfulness on demand and not a motivational jolt. It is the state in which you have something to act with again: strength, footing, the sense of belonging to yourself. A card helps find it by recognition rather than persuasion: you look at an image and remember where that state has already been yours. Below: a fifteen-minute practice and the decks for it.
Why "pull yourself together" does not work
Telling yourself to buck up addresses the will, and what is depleted is usually not the will. Someone out of strength already knows they should pull themselves together; the knowledge adds nothing except guilt for failing to.
A resource comes back differently: through recognising a specific state you have already had. Not an abstract "I could use some strength", but "it was like that on the kitchen that evening, when everything was done and nowhere to go". Such a memory returns details rather than a mood: the posture, the breathing, the temperature, what was at hand.
The card works as a hook here. The image does not name your state and does not prescribe it, it offers something to catch on so that your own scene can be pulled up. In resource work what matters is not how beautiful a card is but how recognisable.
The practice: four positions
Fifteen minutes, four cards. The positions lead from the current state to one concrete action.
-
1
Where I am now
One card drawn blind for the current state. Describe what you see and name one word about yourself today. Do not judge it: "empty" and "heavy" are answers too.
-
2
Where it was different
A second card for a resource memory. Look for an ordinary day that was fine rather than a celebration. Recall three details: the place, the time of day, what was in your hands.
-
3
What held that state
A third card for the support. Sometimes a person, sometimes an activity, sometimes plain quiet. Say it out loud: "what held me was this".
-
4
What of it is available today
A fourth card for the step. One requirement: the step has to fit into today. Not "start running", but "go outside for ten minutes".

Which deck fits
Resource work does not like anxious plots: the deck should offer something to lean on rather than something to decipher.

What it is not
Three expectations that make the practice disappointing.
Not a recharge
Fifteen minutes do not produce energy for a week. They produce one available action and an understanding of what holds you.
Not a substitute for rest
After three sleepless nights a resource card shows exactly what you already know. Sleep and food work better than any practice.
Not positive thinking
We are not looking for something to be glad about. We are looking for what actually held, even if it was tidying up in silence.
When cards are not the right help
Resource work has a limit past which it becomes a way of not noticing the problem.
If the state has not shifted for weeks, sleep and appetite are gone and familiar activities give nothing at all, this is not a question of resources. It is a reason to talk to a specialist, and a card practice here replaces action.
Working alone does not suit an acute state or thoughts of self-harm. In detail on the page about the limits of the method.
