About this technique

Money flow is a 20-minute self-reflection technique with metaphorical associative cards (MAC). Five cards on your relationship with money: what blocks the flow, three actions, and the state they lead to. The session is designed to be run on your own, in your browser, without a therapist or a registration step.

It fits when you think about money a lot and in circles, and no concrete action gets picked. On the platform the steps walk you through automatically inside Self-Work Navigator, so you don't have to remember anything beyond the question you brought. We recommend starting with Momentum – it lands well for this kind of work.

Questions this technique helps with

These are the kinds of questions people bring to this technique. If you recognise yours, you are in the right place.

  • MAC card layout about money. Five positions: what blocks the flow, three actions and the state they lead to. The layout is about your relationship with money, not the amount.
  • What blocks money exercise with cards. The first position looks past external circumstances at the belief or fear you carry around.
  • Metaphorical cards about finances online. The Momentum deck: 88 scenes of working life with a money group. The session runs in the browser, guided by the Self-Work Navigator.
  • Finding your money beliefs on your own. The question «what message about money did I hear as a child» usually gives more than a budget review.
  • First step towards income exercise. The layout ends with one action for the week, with a date: not «earn more», but one concrete task.
  • Five-card layout on money anxiety. If income went up and the anxiety stayed, the layout shows that the anxiety is not held by the amount.

When this technique fits

  • You think about money a lot and in circles, and no concrete action gets picked.
  • You suspect it is not about the amount or the skill, but about something inside.
  • You want to see the first real step, not to build a financial plan.

When it doesn't fit

  • With compulsive spending or a gambling problem this is not the work to do: that needs a professional, not a layout.
  • In an acute financial situation (lost income, overdue debt) practical help comes first: a career adviser, a lawyer, a financial professional. Cards give no financial advice and do not replace it.

What you need

  • 20 minutes alone: money is rarely a neutral topic.
  • A deck with everyday or working-life scenes.
  • Paper and pen: the first position usually needs writing down.

The layout

5 positions. Each one has its own question, and the card in it answers that question rather than the whole request.

1 Block 2 Action 1 3 Action 2 4 Action 3 5 Outcome
  1. 1BlockWhich belief or fear gets in the way?
  2. 2Action 1What do I do first?
  3. 3Action 2What change is needed alongside it?
  4. 4Action 3What locks the result in?
  5. 5OutcomeWhat does my relationship with money become?

How the session goes

  1. 1

Name the topic in one sentence

The more specific, the more useful the layout. «My income went up and the anxiety stayed the same» works better than «I want more money». Write it down.

  2. 2

Card 1 blind: what blocks it

The first position. Not «external circumstances», but the belief or fear you carry around. Look at the image in silence, then answer.

    • What do I see here, and what in this image feels unpleasant?
    • What message about money did I hear as a child?
    • What would happen if I had noticeably more money than now?
  3. 3

    Cards 2, 3, 4 blind: three actions

Draw three cards and lay them left to right. Each one hints at a change: one may be about doing, another about a boundary, a third about a conversation. Turn each image into a single line of action.

    • What action does this image suggest?
    • Is it about doing, about a boundary, or about talking to someone?
    • What has stopped me from doing it before?
  4. 4

Card 5 chosen openly: where this leads

Pick the last card with your eyes. This is the state you want to be in around money. Place it in the fifth position and stay with it a little longer than with the others.

    • How does this state feel in the body?
    • What changes in my life besides the amount?
    • How is this different from the first card?
  5. 5

Pick one action for this week

Out of the three actions keep one, the smallest, and give it a day. Not «start earning more», but «send the invoice that has been sitting since last month, on Wednesday».

Closing the session

Collect the cards, keep the sheet with the action and the date. Check in a week: done or not, and what got in the way. That is the material for next time.

If a lot came up

Money almost always pulls family history, shame or fear along with it, and the first position surfaces that. If it gets heavy, finish at the three actions and go no further. With constant financial anxiety that makes it hard to sleep or work, a therapist helps more than a repeat layout: that anxiety is not about the amount.

About metaphorical associative cards (MAC)

Metaphorical associative cards (MAC) are a projective tool used in self-reflection, coaching and therapy. Unlike tarot or oracle cards, they don't predict anything – the image becomes a mirror for what is already happening inside you, helping you put words on something that was unclear or hard to say directly.

You can work with MAC cards alone, with a therapist, or in a group. The card itself is not the answer; it is a frame for asking yourself a more honest question. The same image can mean very different things to two different people on the same day, and that is exactly what makes the tool work.
