Open Self-Work NavigatorAbout this technique
Four-point cross: give and take is a 15-minute self-reflection technique with metaphorical associative cards (MAC). Four cards around a cross show the balance of exchange: what is not working, what you give, what comes back, and what would improve it. The session is designed to be run on your own, in your browser, without a therapist or a registration step.
It fits when something feels tilted at home or at work, and you cannot tell which way. On the platform the steps walk you through automatically inside Self-Work Navigator, so you don't have to remember anything beyond the question you brought. We recommend starting with Between Us – it lands well for this kind of work.
Questions this technique helps with
These are the kinds of questions people bring to this technique. If you recognise yours, you are in the right place.
- Four-point cross card layout. Four positions around a cross: what is not working, what I give, what I receive and what would improve it.
- What I give and what I get exercise. Two opposite positions show the exchange: the tilt usually becomes visible when you compare left and right.
- Card layout on relationship balance. It works with people and with work alike: «me and my team», «me and my sister», «me and this project».
- How to see your own part in a situation. The layout shows your half of the exchange, including the contribution you do not count as one.
- Exercise when you give more than you get. If something feels tilted, the layout helps you check the feeling and decide whether it is acceptable.
When this technique fits
- Something feels tilted at home or at work, and you cannot tell which way.
- You feel you put in more than you get back, and you want to check that feeling.
- The situation keeps repeating and you want to see your own part in it, not only the other side.
When it doesn't fit
- In an active conflict, or where there is abuse, this technique does not help: it assumes an exchange is possible at all. That situation needs a person's support, not a layout.
- If you want to understand the other person, this layout will not do it. It shows your view of the exchange and your own contribution.
What you need
- 15 minutes and a willingness to look honestly at your half of the exchange.
- A deck with interaction scenes or images of people.
- Paper and pen.
The layout
4 positions. Each one has its own question, and the card in it answers that question rather than the whole request.
- 1ProblemWhat is not working in this exchange?
- 2I giveWhat do I put in?
- 3I receiveWhat comes back?
- 4ImprovesWhich change shifts the exchange?
How the session goes
-
1
Name the relationship or the situation
One sentence: who or what this exchange is with. «Me and my team», «me and my sister», «me and this project». The layout works with people and with work alike.
-
2
Card 1 blind: what is not working
The top position of the cross. Look at the image and hold off on conclusions: the first card often shows something other than what you called the problem.
- What do I see here?
- What real difficulty sits under the thing I called the problem?
- How long has it been like this?
-
3
Card 2 blind: what I give
The left position. Your contribution: time, attention, money, work, patience. The card may show a contribution you do not count as one.
- What am I putting in, looking at this image?
- What of it do I give by choice, and what by habit?
- What do I give without noticing that I give it?
-
4
Card 3 blind: what I receive
The right position. What comes back, including what usually goes uncounted: calm, status, familiarity, experience.
- What comes to me, looking at this image?
- What that I need is missing here?
- What do I receive but never count as a return?
-
5
Look at the cross as a whole
Three cards are down. Compare left and right without hurrying. An exchange is rarely even, and the question is not equality but whether the tilt is acceptable to you.
- Which side is bigger: the left or the right?
- Is this tilt something I choose, or something that just happened?
- What of it am I willing to leave as it is?
-
6
Card 4 blind: what would improve it
The bottom position. Not a solution to the problem, but the thing that shifts the exchange. Turn the image into one concrete change and write it down.
- What change does this card suggest?
- Is it about giving differently, or about asking?
- What is the smallest step possible this week?
Closing the session
Collect the cards. If the layout showed a tilt, do not rush to level it all at once: one change you can test is enough. Look again in two weeks and see whether the feeling shifted.
If a lot came up
The «give» and «receive» positions sometimes show a picture you would rather not see, especially in close relationships. That is normal and it does not mean the relationship has to end: the layout shows one slice, not a verdict. If there is a lot of resentment or helplessness inside, a conversation with a therapist will do more than another layout alone.

About metaphorical associative cards (MAC)
Metaphorical associative cards (MAC) are a projective tool used in self-reflection, coaching and therapy. Unlike tarot or oracle cards, they don't predict anything – the image becomes a mirror for what is already happening inside you, helping you put words on something that was unclear or hard to say directly.
You can work with MAC cards alone, with a therapist, or in a group. The card itself is not the answer; it is a frame for asking yourself a more honest question. The same image can mean very different things to two different people on the same day, and that is exactly what makes the tool work.
